Badminton Horse Trials is one of the most awe-inspiring events in the sporting calendar but what you pack as a spectator can make or break your day! Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned fan, here’s your ultimate, quick-fire checklist with tips from some of the aficionados of Eventing - read on for what to bring:
1. Comfortable Shoes
Prepare to walk a lot , even if you're only there to shop. The forecast promises a dry Badminton in 2025, but still, you'll be navigating fields and uneven ground. Trainers or sturdy flats are ideal.
2. Snacks & Water Bottle
There are plenty of water fountains to refill your water bottle, and fabulous food is readily available, but queues can get long. Stay water-fuelled throughout the day - it will help your energy too!
3. A Rug or fold-up Seat
Perfect for picnics, resting between the action, and grabbing a prime spot for the cross-country thrills - the best spots for Saturday's lakeside action get very full early, so you want to be able to set up your base and enjoy every moment.
4. Binoculars
Get closer to the action without leaving your comfy perch - binoculars are a real boon for every day, not just cross-country Saturday! There are big screens for all the action, but there's nothing like zoning in on a rider's face to catch a special moment of love between a combination who have worked for years towards this dream, a grimace after a dodgy stride or even a wink from one of our best known riders to a dressage judge! I've spotted them all!
5. Sun Cream & Bug Spray
Having been going to Badminton for over 50 years, including as the groom of a winning horse, I've lost count of the number of sunburnt spectators I've spotted here! Be ready (and bite-free).
6. A Backpack or Tote
Hands-free is the way to go. Choose something lightweight but roomy for your essentials and shopping finds from the amazing tradestands - and don't forget to go to the gorgeous Parasol-UK stand at 48 Allengrove Avenue (they have ravishing block-printed tote bags with pockets for your phone as well as soft furnishings and nightwear) opposite fabulous Off-Beat Safaris where you can book the holiday of a lifetime.

7. Cash & Card
Many stalls now take card payments, but thousands of people and a patchy signal in rural areas means having some cash is still a great choice.
9. Weatherproof Clothing
Badminton weather can switch faster than a showjumper on a tight turn. Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket, sunglasses, and a hat - layers are key!
10. Event Programme & Map
Stay on top of timings, find the best viewing spots, and don't miss any of the action! Here is the link for runners, riders, timetables and so much more.
Top Tip:
Badminton Horse Trials is more than just world-class eventing - it's a social day out (very!) packed with shopping, style, and countryside charm. Dress with informally but appropriately - it's not a music festival however buzzy and uplifting it might feel.
Dogs at Badminton: What You Need to Know
We love seeing dogs at Badminton, but please think carefully before bringing them. It's a busy, bustling day with big crowds, loud noises, and long hours on foot — not every dog will find it fun. If in doubt, it might be kinder to leave them at home.
And finally, a plea...
If you do bring your dog, please have a quiet word beforehand and explain that a parasol pole is not a lamp post. Enough said!
Can't wait to see you there and we do hope that these Eventing essentials will help you again at other superb UK horse trials in 2025
With happy wishes, from Polly & Susie x
